The Hunger Landscape in the Greater Dallas area is vast. The majority of the more than 280,000 children in the Greater Dallas area, facing hunger on a daily basis, live in the southern sector of our city. In the Dallas Independent School District, more than 87% of the children are eligible for lunch program assistance. Educators are discovering that many challenges in the classroom are related to hunger. FEED 3 is a joint project with the North Texas Food Planning Association to end the hunger crisis in North Texas. Feed the Body is a grass roots campaign that identifies and addresses daily hunger needs of impoverished neighborhoods in North Texas.

To See James Pitts on his stage, cooking and directing others, keeping the kitchen at the Calvert Place Men’s Shelter running smoothly, you wouldn’t guess this man has recently found victory over a 22-year drug addiction. While he continues to advance through the Discipleship program, James is assistant to Jackson Zepeda in the Men’s Shelter kitchen.

Using these fourteen feeding programs, the North Texas Food Bank provides access to food at more than 1,100 feeding locations throughout our service area. Each program presents a unique solution to the ongoing problem of hunger in our community.

The dining room at The Bridge is called the Second Chance Café. The Stewpot is currently serving three meals a day, seven days a week to more than 700 people per meal in the Second Chance Café - with the assistance of over 1300 wonderful volunteers a month! Volunteers dish up a delicious, nutritious meal prepared by the Second Chance Cafe Kitchen staff served cafeteria style. Volunteers also pour beverages for our guests once they are seated Meals are served at the following times:

• Breakfast 7:00 – 8:30 am
• Lunch 11:30 – 1:00 pm
• Dinner 6:00 – 7:00 pm

Established by First Presbyterian Church in 1975, The Stewpot began serving food when church members realized no other resources were available for the homeless and hungry. By 1991, Stewpot programs included a wide range of social services and the agency moved across the street to a donated two story office building that continues to be “home”. Over the years, The Stewpot has helped to “birth” new organizations to meet community needs including Austin Street Center, Genesis Women's Shelter, Interfaith Housing and The Bridge. The Stewpot collaborates with more than 25 other nonprofits in order to provide a continuum of care.

Since May 2008, The Stewpot has been the sole meal provider at The Bridge (Dallas’ homeless assistance center), serving 1,500-2,000 meals per day, 7 days per week.

The SoupMobile is a mobile soup kitchen that feeds and shelters the homeless. As a faith-based nonprofit, we serve over 200,000 meals per year and shelter the homeless in our 7 group homes. Our Mission Statement is three simple words spoken by Jesus: "FEED MY SHEEP."

The SoupMobile was founded in 2003 by David Timothy, a.k.a. The SoupMan, on a wing and a lot of prayers. The SoupMobile is different from traditional soup kitchens in that we are ‘mobile’ and take the food to areas where the homeless congregate. We are literally on the front lines of the war against hunger in Dallas, Texas.

 Hunger Busters’

http://www.hungerbusters.com/

Hunger Busters’ mission is to provide a much-needed third meal of the day to food-insecure children.

Why we’re here

Over 137,000 (87%) of the children attending Dallas schools rely on school-subsidized breakfast and/or lunch as their only resource for food. All too often, these children go without dinner. Many of them have nothing to eat from school lunch one day until school breakfast the next.

What we do

Hunger Busters “Feed the Need” after school program provides an evening meal to many of these hungry kids throughout the year. With the help of committed volunteers, continuing and new partners and donors, Hunger Busters will take a big bite out of Dallas’ childhood hunger epidemic.
